"During a Tuesday appearance with Fox's Martha MacCallum, Vance responded to the allegation that her decision to ski for China was a treasonous move. I certainly think that somebody who grew up in the United States of America, who benefited from our education system, from the freedoms and liberties that make this country a great place, I would hope they want to compete with the United States of America, said Vance of Gu, who's currently a student at Stanford University."
"I'm flattered. Thanks, JD! That's sweet. She was then asked whether she feels like a bit of a punching bag for a certain strand of American politics at the moment, to which she responded, I do. So many athletes compete for a different country, she continued. People only have a problem with me doing it because they kind of lump China into this monolithic entity, and they just hate China. So it's not really about what they think it's about."
Eileen Gu, a Chinese-American freestyle skier, faces criticism from Vice President JD Vance over her decision to compete for China. Gu was born in San Francisco to a mother from Beijing and says competing for China reflects her mother's roots. Milan is her second Olympic appearance after winning two golds and a silver in 2022, and she has earned two silver medals so far in 2026. Vance said he would hope someone who benefited from American education and liberties would want to compete for the United States. Gu said she feels like a punching bag, criticized anti-China sentiment, and reported a physical attack on Stanford's campus last year.
