The Council intends to look ahead and continue addressing critical issues that are affecting Bangor and other cities across the country, such as the housing crisis, the unhoused population and the opioid epidemic,"
"a woman in recovery, who enjoys supporting others in their recovery"
Angela Walker was sworn in Nov. 10 as a Bangor city council member after finishing among the top three vote-getters. Walker served a 10-year prison sentence after pleading guilty along with her brother in the 2002 death of Derek Rogers, who was found beaten and suffocated with sand after an altercation. Walker is not affiliated with a political party and campaigned on improving social services, supports for unhoused people, and public transportation. She now works as a peer services coordinator for Bangor Area Recovery Network and identifies as a woman in recovery who supports others. City officials said the council will address housing, homelessness and the opioid epidemic. Some conservative social media users and Maine Republicans expressed outrage and concern over her election.
