Zohran Mamdani was inaugurated as New York City mayor and placed his left hand on two family Qurans during his swearing-in shortly after midnight. Sen. Tommy Tuberville shared a screenshot of a news report about the Quran usage and wrote, "The enemy is inside the gates." Tuberville later claimed that New York City would soon be completely Muslim and suggested such change would spread nationwide. Tuberville is running for Alabama governor and has repeatedly criticized Islam, calling it a cult and urging removal of Muslims from the country. Bernie Sanders spoke at the inauguration following Mamdani's victory over Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani was born in Uganda to Indian parents and immigrated to the U.S. around age ten.
