Scoop: GOP Rep. Don Bacon weighed resignation over Trump's Russia-Ukraine peace plan
"Bacon told Axios he was "so angry" at the Trump administration's proposed 28-point Russia-Ukraine peace plan last week that he "thought about" resigning early."
"He dubbed the proposal the "Witkoff Ukrainian surrender plan," referring to Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, who helped craft it."
"But "in the end I have a commitment to our constituents to fulfill my term," Bacon said, adding that he "shared my anger" with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) but "didn't mention resignation.""
The proposed 28-point plan would recognize some occupied Ukrainian regions as de facto Russian, cap the size of Ukraine's military, and require Ukraine to agree never to join NATO. Rep. Don Bacon, a centrist foreign policy hawk and staunch Ukraine supporter who plans to retire in 2027, said he was so angry he considered resigning early but decided to fulfill his term. Bacon called the proposal the "Witkoff Ukrainian surrender plan" and shared his anger with House Speaker Mike Johnson while not formally resigning. His early departure would further reduce the already narrow House Republican majority, currently 219-213, especially after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's announced January resignation, and Democrats are favored in multiple upcoming special elections that could narrow the GOP margin further.
