Scoop: Dozens of Democratic House candidates won't commit to backing Hakeem Jeffries
""Leader Jeffries is focused on battling Donald Trump, ending the Republican shutdown of the federal government and addressing the crushing GOP health care crisis," Jeffries spokesperson Justin Chermol told Axios."
""I think we need to have a new type of leadership that's ... going to fight back significan"
A survey of 113 Democratic House candidates who could plausibly win in 2026 shows substantial reluctance to endorse Hakeem Jeffries for speaker or minority leader. Twenty said they would not vote for Jeffries, five more said they were likely to vote against him, 57 declined to commit, 24 would definitely vote for him, and seven said they would likely do so. Many holdouts are insurgents or long shots, but several competitive primary contenders and some front-runners also stopped short of committing. Concerns cited include ideological differences and perceived flaws in strategy, messaging, and leadership. Jeffries is framed as focused on battling Donald Trump, ending a Republican shutdown, and addressing GOP health care problems.
