"Schumer needs to get the hell out": House Democrats fume over DHS funding talks
"I'm gonna continue to tell you that Schumer needs to get the hell out over and over and over until he does,"
"The main feeling among members is a lack of trust in his strength and ability to strike a hard bargain."
"Absent bold and meaningful change, there is no credible path forward with respect to the Department of Homeland Security funding bill next week."
"I'm just going to say we're sending them a proposal and we await their response."
Rep. Delia Ramirez said she will repeatedly tell Schumer that he needs to "get the hell out," and added that he "continues to demonstrate to us that he can't meet the moment." An anonymous House Democrat said members lack trust in Schumer's strength and ability to strike a hard bargain. The House passed an appropriations package funding Defense, HHS, Labor, HUD, State and Transportation until September and funding DHS at 2025 levels through Feb. 13 to allow time for negotiations on ICE and Customs and Border Protection reforms. Senate Republicans questioned the prospect of a quick deal, with Sen. John Thune calling a Feb. 13 agreement "an impossibility" and proposing a year-long stopgap. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries warned of allowing a DHS shutdown absent substantive reforms. Schumer said he is sending a proposal and awaiting a response.
