Pope Leo, Donald Trump differ on course of United States DW 12/25/2025
"The remarks that are made about Europe, also in interviews recently, I think, are trying to break apart what I think needs to be a very important alliance, today and in the future,"
""What excitement," Trump wrote, "and what a Great Honor for our Country.""
Pope Leo XIV criticized remarks about Europe that he said aim to break apart an important alliance today and in the future. Since May 8 a US citizen has led the Catholic Church for the first time. Donald Trump began his second term on January 20 and became the first US president to contend with an American pope. The United States has about 340 million people while the global Catholic population is about 1.4 billion. Approximately 55% of US Catholics voted for Trump in 2024. Rumors circulated that wealthy conservative US Catholics offered large donations if the next pope were American. Trump posted on Truth Social that he looked forward to meeting Leo XIV and called the development “What excitement” and “a Great Honor for our Country.” Leo has repeatedly criticized US immigration policy, attracting early support from some US bishops.
