Polls Show Trump on Thin Ice With Interventionist Threats
"There's always a shortage of public polls after the holidays, so it has been difficult to get a quick read on how people are reacting to Donald Trump's Venezuela gambit and his continuing threats to take military action against Iran, Greenland, and other countries. But there's just enough data to suggest this suddenly interventionist president will be on thin ice with the public if he goes beyond the kind of hit-and-run tactics he deployed in deposing and capturing Nicolás Maduro."
"A Reuters-Ipsos poll immediately after the strike on Caracas showed a third of Americans supported it, a third opposed it, and a third had no opinion. A CBS poll a day later that forced yes-or-no reactions showed 48 percent approval and 52 percent disapproval of the action. An Economist-YouGov survey a week after the attack showed 40 percent of Americans supporting and 45 percent opposing the use of "military force to remove" Maduro."
Public reaction to the Maduro operation was mixed, with polls showing roughly even support, opposition, and a significant number unsure. Reuters-Ipsos found one-third support, one-third opposition, and one-third undecided immediately after the strike. A CBS forced yes-or-no question showed 48 percent approval and 52 percent disapproval. An Economist-YouGov survey found 40 percent support and 45 percent opposition. Quinnipiac showed 47 percent supported removal and 45 percent opposed. Republicans showed strong backing, Democrats showed low backing, and independents generally leaned toward opposition. Majorities opposed more aggressive or enduring U.S. control over Venezuela.
