"Republicans hold the Senate 53-47, but Democrats are hoping to gain the necessary four seats to flip control of the upper chamber in November. Wresting a seat from Republicans in Texas would likely put Democrats well on their way to doing so. The runoff outcome will therefore affect not only the Texas Senate race but also the broader balance of power in the Senate."
Trump endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the GOP primary runoff against Sen. John Cornyn. Paxton’s record includes impeachment by the GOP-controlled Texas House for abusing office. The impeachment articles allege Paxton used his position to help donor Nate Paul, who faced a federal investigation, and that Paul employed a woman having an affair with Paxton at Paxton’s behest. Republican senators reacted with unease, with some expressing support for Cornyn and others warning the endorsement could jeopardize the seat. The runoff winner will face Democratic state Rep. James Talarico, after he defeated Rep. Jasmine Crockett. Democrats aim to gain four seats to flip the Senate, and winning in Texas would strengthen that effort.
