A rioter pardoned by President Donald Trump now faces new criminal charges for allegedly threatening to kill House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. State Sen. John Liu and Assembly Member Charles Lavine introduced bill S6123/A3966 just before the fifth anniversary to require New York public schools to teach lessons on the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection alongside existing civic education and other historical events such as slavery and the Holocaust. The Jan. 6 attack involved Trump supporters, militia members and white supremacists attempting to stop certification of the 2020 election, resulting in more than 100 injured officers, multiple deaths and subsequent officer suicides.
