New Jersey GOP lawmakers introduced a resolution to explore annexing Staten Island after Zohran Mamdani won the Democratic mayoral primary. The initiative stems from borough activist John Tabacco's suggestion, with 21 of 28 Assembly Republicans supporting it. The resolution aims to create a bipartisan committee to investigate New Jersey's claims to Staten Island, referencing historical agreements from the 18th century. Although GOP gubernatorial nominee Jack Ciattarelli encouraged discontented New York City residents to move to New Jersey, Democratic opposition is anticipated in the predominantly blue state.
The New Jersey resolution would create a bipartisan panel of 12 assemblymembers to investigate and report on the historical, legal, and geographic claims of the State of New Jersey to Staten Island.
Twenty-one of the Assembly's 28 Republicans have signed on to the legislation as sponsors or co-sponsors.
Jack Ciattarelli tweeted to New York City residents, encouraging those opposed to a socialist mayor to consider moving to New Jersey.
Lawmakers in both New York and New Jersey would have to agree to the plan, and the annexation would also have to be approved by Congress.
