The Department of Justice created a $1.776 billion anti-weaponization fund in exchange for Trump dropping his lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service. The fund would pay people who convince a DOJ commission they were victims of weaponization, and critics say Jan. 6 Capitol riot participants could qualify. Trump sued his own administration in January for $10 billion after leaks of his tax returns, and the New York Times reported in 2020 that he paid $750 in income tax in 2016 and 2017. After taking office in January 2025, Trump pardoned virtually every Jan. 6 defendant. Administration officials have questioned the fund’s viability, and White House aides have proposed killing it for immigration enforcement funding from Congress. Trump has not agreed to drop the fund but has told allies he faces political problems with Senate Republicans, and Sen. Ted Cruz said senators yelled at acting Attorney General Todd Blanche in a closed-door meeting.
