""I'm proud to represent the strength, faith, and hard work of my community. Thank you to Seth for this invite.""
""he was confined to a room with dozens of other men and no windows. He was given no bed to sleep in, no time outside, no permission to shower, and he was only able to brush his teeth twice.""
""captures what's broken in our immigration system right now.""
Marcelo Gomes da Silva, a Milford high school student originally from Brazil, will attend the State of the Union as a guest of Rep. Seth Moulton on Feb. 24. Gomes was detained by ICE in May 2025 while driving to volleyball practice; agents said they were targeting his father. Gomes entered the United States on a student visa at age seven and later had an expired visa without his knowledge. He has no criminal record and was held for six days in a Burlington ICE facility before release on a $2,000 bond. Gomes described humiliating detention conditions and his lawyer detailed severe confinement and lack of basic hygiene access. Moulton said Gomes's experience underscores failures in the immigration system, and Gomes said representing his community at the address is deeply meaningful.
