"The case for (and against) a Matt Mahan run,"
"seriously considering running for governor and he's had calls with supporters and donors in recent days to gauge their support."
"I'm listening and learning a lot, and heavily weighing this potential run,"
"I've committed to getting to a decision soon. I will say I've been overwhelmed by all the positive outreach."
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, 43, is in his second term as mayor of the nation's 13th-largest city. He has strong Silicon Valley roots and has built a coalition of moderates and business leaders, often at odds with traditional labor support within Democrats. Mahan is seriously weighing a potential run for California governor and has held calls with supporters and donors to gauge support. He says he is listening, learning and heavily weighing the potential run, has committed to deciding soon, and has been overwhelmed by positive outreach. If he enters the race he would be a late-comer to a crowded field; a June ranked-choice primary is just over four months away, with Democrats holding 45% of registered voters. Gov. Gavin Newsom is ineligible.
