An immigration crackdown began after an Afghan national was accused of shooting two National Guard members in Washington, D.C. Local Afghan residents have condemned the shooting and expressed concern about potential repercussions. The Council on American-Islamic Relations reports at least 12 Afghans in Northern California were detained by ICE since Monday. CAIR says the administration is targeting as many as 2,000 Afghan immigrants and that ICE leaders must report daily on detentions. CAIR believes many detained individuals are in the U.S. legally and assisted U.S. efforts against the Taliban. An immigration attorney said national security allows the government to re-vet approved applicants. Afghan community members in Fremont report palpable fear, and CAIR advises anyone contacted by ICE to consult a lawyer and to remain united.
