"Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander Solomon told the jury in Brooklyn federal court how Sun and husband Chris Hu, who is a co-defendant in the case, allegedly leveraged their contacts within the Chinese government to acquire millions of dollars in business contracts and later returned the favor by keeping Taiwan away from the Governor's office. Sun also received millions in kickbacks for steering New York State contracts for personal protective equipment to a Chinese business run by a family friend, Solomon argued."
Federal prosecutors argued that Linda Sun, a former gubernatorial aide, acted as an undisclosed agent of the Chinese government in exchange for lucrative business deals and gifts. Prosecutors said Sun and her husband Chris Hu leveraged Chinese government contacts to win millions in contracts and to influence the Governor's office to keep Taiwan away. Prosecutors alleged Sun received millions in kickbacks for steering New York State PPE contracts to a Chinese business run by a family friend. Sun and Hu pleaded not guilty to counts including failure to register as agents, wire fraud, PPE fraud, visa fraud and money laundering. The defense said the case contains major gaps. The jury is expected to begin deliberations Thursday.
