"The Danish Atlantic Islands Association has been formed here, with the object of arousing the nation's interest in its outlying possessions and preventing the diminution by sale or otherwise of territory under Danish sovereignty. The movement originated at the time of the proposed sale of the Danish West Indies to the United States, and has been strengthened by the reports that Canada desired to purchase Greenland."
"Our average representative in Congress now has to look after some 41,000 more constituents than he had on his hands ten years ago, or more than 235,000 in all. But the reapportionment bill now before Congress reduces this number to about 212,000. This will be effected by adding forty-two representatives to the House, but even then the average member will represent some 17,700 more men, women and children than he did a decade back."
The Danish Atlantic Islands Association was formed in Copenhagen to arouse national interest in outlying possessions and prevent diminution of territory under Danish sovereignty. The movement began during the proposed sale of the Danish West Indies to the United States and gained strength after reports that Canada desired to purchase Greenland. Many members of the Danish nobility led efforts to retain the Danish West Indies, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland. In the United States, the average congressional representative had roughly 41,000 more constituents than a decade earlier, exceeding 235,000. A reapportionment bill proposed adding forty-two seats to raise the House to 435 members and reduce average constituencies to about 212,000, though representatives would still serve substantially larger districts than before.
