Republican allies alleged that the Justice Department had been weaponized against Trump and subpoenaed Smith for private testimony. Smith said he operated without interference from Attorney General Merrick Garland or other top Justice Department officials. Smith was appointed in November 2022 and quickly brought two federal cases.
