ICE buys Roxbury, NJ property for detention facilities amid local opposition, DHS says
"The spokesperson on Tuesday declined to provide specific details on the property in Morris County, including the address, how much it cost to buy and how many people ICE plans to detain there. But the move is a significant development in the ongoing saga around the agency's intended expansion in North Jersey and comes amid community opposition to ICE opening up detention facilities in the area."
"Roxbury municipal leaders said they were blindsided by the news on Tuesday when informed by Gothamist. Township Manager J.J. Murphy said DHS has repeatedly failed to respond to Roxbury officials' inquiries about a potential purchase of municipal property. Neither Murphy, Mayor Shawn Potillo nor any of the six other Republicans on the township council immediately commented further about ICE's purchase."
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement purchased property in Roxbury, Morris County, New Jersey for future immigrant detention facilities. Department of Homeland Security officials declined to provide the property's address, purchase price, or planned detainee capacity. DHS stated the site would house "very well-structured detention facilities meeting our regular detention standards" and said the project would create 1,300 jobs and generate more than $39 million in tax revenue. Roxbury municipal leaders said they were blindsided and reported repeated DHS silence on inquiries about a potential purchase of municipal property. The township council previously voted 7-0 that the location was not appropriate for such use.
