Hunted by Maduro and detained by ICE: The uncertain future of former Venezuelan mayor Carlos Garcia
"On January 23, he was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and taken to a detention center in Butler County, Hamilton, Ohio, where he lives with his wife and children. The couple was at an immigration appointment, as they have been doing every three months since arriving in the country on February 1, 2022. His wife encountered no trouble, but he was detained despite his long-standing asylum application and ample evidence that he is a political refugee."
"We are simply asking that he be allowed to defend his case where he formally requested asylum. As his wife and mother, I am deeply concerned that he will be sent to a place where he would be completely alone, without a support network, and far from his family. We trust that the process will be fair and that he will be able to continue his case where he started it, stated his wife and spokesperson for the case, Gabriela Duarte."
Carlos Garcia, 42, a former mayor of Mérida, was detained by ICE on January 23 while attending a routine immigration appointment in Butler County, Ohio. Garcia and his wife arrived in the United States on February 1, 2022, and have attended asylum-related appointments every three months. His lawyers filed a writ of habeas corpus and at a February 10 hearing the Department of Homeland Security sought his deportation to Ecuador, a country where he has no family, home, or history of seeking protection. Venezuela's Supreme Court removed Garcia as mayor in 2017 and sentenced him to 15 months in prison.
