HUD rule could push families with undocumented immigrants out of their homes
"ending the era of illegal aliens and other ineligible noncitizens exploiting public housing resources."
"Trump's proposal runs contrary to federal law and is designed to instill fear and hardship on immigrant families,"
"His administration deflects blame for the housing crisis onto immigrants so they can continue dismantling HUD's hallmark and lifesaving housing programs."
HUD proposed a rule to ban families with any undocumented member from federally subsidized housing and to require local housing authorities to report ineligible tenants to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Undocumented immigrants do not receive federal rental aid but can live with family members who do, including many U.S.-born children. HUD stated roughly 24,000 such residents are in HUD-subsidized housing. Most noncitizens with permanent legal status remain eligible for housing aid. Cities with large immigrant populations would face the biggest impact. Critics say the proposal violates federal law, would instill fear and hardship, and could trigger tens of thousands of evictions.
