How Trump Is Still Deporting People Wherever He Wants
"In March of 2025, the Trump Administration was widely criticized for sending more than two hundred Venezuelans who had been living in America to CECOT, a notoriously brutal mega-prison in El Salvador. Yet, over the past eleven months, the Administration has continued the practice of deporting large numbers of noncitizens to so-called third countries, or countries to which the deportee typically has no connection."
"This third-country practice has continued, however, despite the fact that a number of deportees have been sent back to their home countries after arriving in the third country. (Others remain stuck in prisons, such as CECOT.) Recently, the Administration sent nine people of various nationalities to Cameroon, where most of them are now being held in detention until they agree to return to their home countries."
In March 2025, more than two hundred Venezuelans were sent to CECOT, a brutal mega-prison in El Salvador. The Administration continues to deport large numbers of noncitizens to third countries to which they typically have no connection, even when judicial orders bar removal to home countries because of persecution risks. Some deportees are later returned to their home countries after arriving in the third country; others remain detained in facilities like CECOT. Recently nine people of various nationalities were sent to Cameroon and are being held until they agree to return home. Judicial demands and legal challenges to the third-country process have strained federal courts.
