How SFO's largest airlines are handling the FAA's reduction in flights
"In an unprecedented move, the Federal Aviation Administration has directed airlines to cancel up to 10% of flights across 40 major airports to relieve pressure on air traffic controllers, who are not being paid during the government shutdown. Flights nationwide on Friday and Saturday have already been cancelled, and San Francisco International Airport is among the affected airports listed Thursday by the FAA, along with neighboring Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport."
"United Airlines is the largest airline at SFO, accounting for more than 46% of daily flights departing from the airport. The airline operates 196 mainline flights and 90 flights on its smaller regional carrier, United Express, out of SFO on a daily basis. The airline said in an announcement Wednesday that it would "focus our schedule reductions on regional flying and domestic mainline flights that do not travel between our hubs" while hub-to-hub and international flights would operate as usual."

United Airlines operates over 46% of daily departures at SFO, running 196 mainline and 90 United Express flights daily, and will focus reductions on regional and non-hub domestic mainline flying while preserving hub-to-hub and international service. San Francisco International serviced 3,340 nonstop weekly departures in fiscal 2024, making reductions complex; airlines will cut roughly 4% on Friday and 5% on Saturday while coordinating with the FAA on any ramp-up toward 10% amid tight scheduling and short notice.
