The press release from the Committee on Education and Workforce, said the investigation was launched after receiving disturbing reports of Jewish students being harassed and subjected to open antisemitism in their classrooms and hallways."
"In it, they allege that district staff urged students to join walkouts and demonstrations during school hours that isolate and alienate Jewish students. They claim that antisemitism has also infected the classroom, citing examples of imagery and messages allegedly displayed by teachers that they say are anti-semitic. In early 2024, parents and groups filed a federal civil rights complaint alleging unaddressed severe and persistent harassment of Jewish students in BUSD."
Berkeley Unified was named among three districts in a Republican-led Congressional investigation into alleged antisemitism in K-12 public schools. The committee launched the probe after reports that Jewish students experienced harassment and open antisemitism in classrooms and hallways. The committee alleges district staff encouraged walkouts and demonstrations during school hours that isolated Jewish students and cites examples of alleged anti-semitic imagery and messages in classrooms. In early 2024 parents and groups filed a federal civil rights complaint alleging severe and persistent harassment; the district reported 15 formal complaints and near-complete investigations. A later lawsuit alleged inadequate responses to racism against Palestinian, Arab and Muslim students and staff. Berkeley Unified characterizes the committee letter as relating to allegations addressed when the superintendent appeared before Congress in May 2024.
