The Department of Homeland Security has sent hundreds of administrative subpoenas to Google, Reddit, Discord and Meta requesting names, email addresses, telephone numbers and other identifying details for accounts that criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement or reported agents' locations. Google, Meta and Reddit complied with some requests. Administrative subpoenas differ from warrants and were rarely used previously, typically for serious crimes; their use has ramped up in the past year. Companies may choose whether to comply, can allow subjects up to 14 days to challenge requests, and may notify users unless legally prohibited.
