Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said the parties would explore accommodations while respecting Danish territorial integrity and Greenlandic self-determination. Greenland is about 80% ice capped and obtained home rule in 1979; it joined the EC with Denmark in 1973 and withdrew in 1985 over fishing quotas.
