Gov. Maura Healey said she would not vote for a statewide rent control proposal that would tie annual rent increases to the Consumer Price Index with a 5% hard cap. Volunteers gathered tens of thousands of signatures to place the question on the ballot, and the Secretary of State certified enough signatures to advance. Owner-occupied buildings with four or fewer units and new buildings during their first 10 years would be exempt. Healey highlighted housing construction as the priority, signing a bill authorizing over $5 billion and noting more than 90,000 units completed or in development. She cited studies and investor pullback as reasons rent control could slow production.
