"It shaped my values and taught me what community really means. It's where I fought for marriage equality, where I served on the Salt Lake City Council and in the State Senate, and where I've spent my life working to make our state more affordable, more just, and more inclusive."
"This campaign starts with all of us. Grassroots supporters who believe in a Utah that leads with dignity, fairness, and hope."
"conflicts with the United States Constitution's guarantees of equal protection and due process under the law. The State's current laws deny its gay and lesbian citizens their fundamental right to marry and, in so doing, demean the dignity of these same-sex couples for no rational reason."
Derek Kitchen announced a campaign for Utah's newly drawn First Congressional District, which includes Salt Lake City and leans Democratic. Kitchen previously partnered with Moudi Sbeity and two other same-sex couples in a 2013 federal lawsuit seeking the right to marry in Utah. A district court found the state's ban conflicted with the Constitution's guarantees of equal protection and due process; an appeals court affirmed and the Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal, leading Utah to issue marriage licenses by October 2014. Kitchen later served on the Salt Lake City Council and in the Utah State Senate and emphasizes affordability, justice, inclusion, and grassroots support in his campaign.
