Rahmanullah Lakanwal pleaded not guilty to nine federal charges, including first-degree murder, after an alleged Nov. 26 shooting near the Farragut Square metro stop. He appeared in court in a wheelchair wearing an orange jumpsuit and had been wounded before his arrest. Charges include transportation of a firearm and ammunition with intent to commit a felony, three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed, and four counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. The Department of Justice said it will seek the death penalty. Two National Guard members were shot; one, Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, died and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe was seriously wounded.
