The 35-day government shutdown has disrupted Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program distributions, violating trust and treaty agreements and reducing monthly SNAP benefits for several tribal nations. Many tribes are tapping strained reserve funds to cover food needs with no promise of federal reimbursement. The Cherokee Nation committed over $11 million for food security, including $10.5 million in SNAP-like meal vouchers for about 60,000 citizens and $1.25 million in food bank assistance in northeastern Oklahoma. Tribal leaders advanced funds without legal assurances of repayment. The U.S. Senate failed on Nov. 4 to pass a continuing resolution, extending the shutdown.
