GOP Redistricting May Backfire Due to Team Trump's Incompetence
"He went public in July with a national effort to get red states to remap their congressional districts immediately so that the GOP would go into the midterms with a cushion larger than the likely Democratic gains. And it all began with a blunt demand that Texas give the GOP four or five new seats in a special session that was originally supposed to focus on flood recovery."
"A federal court Tuesday delivered a devastating blow to Texas Republicans' attempt at a mid-decade gerrymander. And the court found that a July letter sent by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) - intended to justify the GOP's aggressive redraw - effectively handed voting rights advocates a smoking gun proving it was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. ... Unless the U.S. Supreme Court reverses it - Texas has already said it will appeal - the state must use its 2021 congressional map for the 2026 elections,"
Donald Trump initiated a national push in July to have red states redraw congressional districts mid-decade to protect GOP control of the House for the 2026 midterms, starting with a demand that Texas add four or five GOP seats during a special session. Texas and other red states complied, while Democrats responded with their own gerrymanders in states like California. A federal court ruled that Texas's mid-decade map was unconstitutional, finding that a July DOJ letter intended to justify the redraw effectively provided evidence of a racial gerrymander. Unless reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court, Texas must use its 2021 map for the 2026 elections, negating the GOP's largest planned redistricting gain.
