Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, a Republican running for Virginia governor, was challenged in a debate about her opposition to LGBTQ+ rights and marriage equality. During accusations about opposing discrimination protections for gay people, she repeatedly interjected, "That's not discrimination!" and was told by moderators to stop interrupting. After the debate, she denied having said that phrase and claimed she could not hear the opponent clearly, calling portions "word salad." She asserted she would not discriminate and attempted to shift the conversation to taxes while referencing her immigrant background from Jamaica.
