The work we do helps our city shine, but we can't do it without your support. If you believe Portland benefits from smart, local journalism and arts coverage, please consider making a small monthly contribution, because without you, there is no us. Thanks for your support!"
"IN LOCAL NEWS: * US. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is scared of the Portland naked bike riders. In a press conference yesterday, Johnson accused "radical leftist activists" of abuse against law enforcement, including by riding their bikes naked through the streets of Portland. In fact, Johnson said this was the "most threatening thing" he's seen yet! "It's getting really ugly," he said."
The Mercury requests small monthly contributions to sustain newsreporting, arts and culture coverage, event calendars, and hosted events that help the city shine. The writer returned from vacation and notes a sunny day with rain incoming. U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson described Portland's naked bike ride protesting the ICE facility as performed by "radical leftist activists" and called it "the most threatening thing" he's seen, adding "It's getting really ugly." The Emergency Naked Bike Ride was peaceful and mirrors the generally nonviolent protests at Portland's ICE facility. Johnson's rhetoric appears to enable suppression of free speech and abusive law enforcement conduct. Portlanders reject that posture.
