""I saw ICE agents circling a young woman who appeared to be Hispanic," he said. "I said to this ICE agent, 'Take me, stop harassing her.'""
""Are you afraid now?""
"Inside the vehicle, Callaghan said, the same agent returned repeatedly to ask whether he was 'afraid yet.' He remained there for about 30 minutes and was released without being arrested or charged, he said."
Rev. Kenny Callaghan, a gay Metropolitan Community Church pastor near Portland Avenue and East 31st Street, approached a commotion after noticing federal agents surrounding a Hispanic-appearing woman. An ICE agent immediately raised a firearm at Callaghan's face after he offered himself to stop the perceived harassment, then handcuffed him and placed him in a black SUV. While detained for about 30 minutes, the agent repeatedly asked whether Callaghan was afraid; he was released without arrest or charges. The incident occurred amid grieving, nonviolent protests following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE officer and has intensified community fear and mistrust.
