Fox Anchor Asks Vance If Chinese-American Should Have Her Status Changed' After Skiing For China in Olympics
"I certainly think that somebody who grew up in the United States of America, who benefited from our education system, from the freedoms and liberties that make this country a great place, I would hope they want to compete with the United States of America. So I'm going to root for American athletes, and I think part of that is people who identify themselves as Americans. That's who I'm rooting for this Olympics."
"Vance's answer comes a day after Gu who was raised in the Bay Area and went to college at Stanford won the silver medal in the women's freeski big air competition for China. The 22-year-old previously won two gold medals and a silver medal competing for China during the 2022 Winter Games. She is by far the highest-paid athlete competing in the games due to her Chinese sponsorships."
Martha MacCallum asked Vice President J.D. Vance whether Eileen Gu's Olympic status should be changed after she chose to compete for China. MacCallum noted many Americans view Gu skiing for China as a treasonous move given her U.S. birth and Chinese immigrant mother and highlighted China’s human rights record, including Uyghur re-education camps. Vance said he did not know what Gu’s status should be and deferred to the Olympics Committee. Vance said he hopes people who benefited from American freedoms would compete for the United States and said he will root for American athletes. Gu, 22, won a silver in freeski big air and previously earned two golds and a silver in 2022, and she is a top-paid athlete due to Chinese sponsorships. Some American athletes have expressed unease about competing, and President Trump criticized one athlete who said he had mixed emotions about representing the U.S.
