Fight ICE. Build the Union.
Briefly

On June 9, Genie Kastrup led protests in Chicago against the ICE detention of David Huerta, a union leader, sparking nationwide demonstrations. These protests highlighted the increasing tension between unions and the Trump administration's immigration policies. Union members are taking action to protect workers from federal raids through emergency rallies and workplace organizing. Despite potential risks, unions aim to create a protective environment for all workers. Labor leaders are expressing concern about being targeted for their opposition to the administration's actions, indicating a rising awareness of the vulnerabilities faced within labor movements.
The demonstration was one of 37 taking place that day across the country to protest the June 6 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) assault and detention of Huerta, the president of SEIU California.
Facing an emboldened Trump administration, union members across the country are in an intensifying battle to keep their members-and all workers, whether or not they are in unions-free and safe from federal immigration authorities.
Huerta had shown up to defend members of his Los Angeles community from federal raids. Images of the long-time labor leader with his head pressed to a curb by ICE agents touched off anger-and mobilization.
Minnesota AFL-CIO President Bernie Burnham said about labor leaders and organizers, 'They'll come after anybody if you disagree with them. I think it's just a matter of time.'
