""Many longtime participants have shared that the level of fear and vulnerability they are experiencing makes joining a large public event feel unsafe,""
""although ICE raids may no longer dominate daily headlines, the threat to our Latino families documented or undocumented remains very real.""
""Every neighborhood across the nation that is predominantly immigrant or predominantly migrant has this very real fear of being targeted in these ICE operations,""
The Santa Barbara Eastside Society canceled the 2025 Milpas Street Holiday Parade, a generations-old winter hallmark in Eastside Santa Barbara. Organizers cited widespread fear and vulnerability among Latino residents, longtime participants, volunteers, local leaders, and immigrant-rights partners as making large public events unsafe. Organizers prioritized community wellbeing and described pausing the parade as the most compassionate and responsible path. ICE activity intensified across the Central Coast in 2025, with the 805 Immigrant Coalition's Rapid Response Network reporting over 300 detentions in Santa Barbara this year. Community leaders and rapid-response workers say fears are grounded in daily observations and concentrated ICE operations.
