DOT Secretary Duffy Threatens to Close Airspace Amid Ongoing Shutdown Standoff
""If you bring us to a week from today, Democrats, you will see mass chaos, you will see mass flight delays,""
""You'll see mass cancellations, and you may see us close certain parts of the airspace, because we just cannot manage it.""
""Air traffic controllers across the country haven't been paid since the shutdown began more than four weeks ago. However, they are legally required to continue working through the shutdown.""
""If you don't come to work, you don't get paid. ... If we have some on our staff that aren't dedicated, we're going to let them go," he said."
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that continued government shutdown could force closures of portions of U.S. airspace and cause mass flight delays and cancellations. Air traffic controllers have not been paid for more than four weeks but remain legally required to work. There are about 14,000 controllers nationwide, and roughly one-fifth have been calling in sick rather than working without pay. Duffy previously threatened to fire workers who failed to show up but later said the controllers need pay and support rather than termination. The threat arrives ahead of a peak travel period around Thanksgiving.
