"It's been six weeks. Republicans made it clear they weren't going to discuss the health care issue, the Affordable Care Act tax credits until the shutdown was over,"
"After 40 long days, I'm hopeful that we can finally bring the shutdown to an end,"
"Health-care costs made a major impact on the 2025 election, and they will certainly have an even greater impact on the 2026 election,"
"the House is not going to take it up."
The Senate reached a tentative deal to end a 40-day government shutdown while promising a vote on extending Affordable Care Act tax credits that affect 22 million people. Democrats had vowed to keep the shutdown until those credits were extended; as recently as Friday they sought a one-year extension. The Sunday agreement only guarantees a vote, not passage, prompting criticism from Sen. Bernie Sanders and opposition votes from Senate Democrats facing 2026 reelection. Centrist senators from King, Shaheen, and Hassan, Republican interlocutors, and a White House pledge to rehire federal workers helped produce the deal.
