Republican lawmakers across the US have pursued bans preventing transgender people from competing in school and college sports. The Texas legislature enacted a K-12 ban in 2021 and extended it to college students in 2023. Nearly 40% of transgender youngsters aged 13-17 live in states with laws or policies that restrict participation consistent with their gender. The Williams Institute estimates about 724,000 transgender youth in the United States. The lawfulness of these bans will be decided by the Supreme Court later this year after a legal challenge brought by trans teenager Becky Pepper-Jackson, represented by the ACLU.
