Dem who released anti-trans ad announces run against history-making lesbian Congresswoman - LGBTQ Nation
"Former Rep Colin Allred (D-TX) has announced he is running in the primary against out incumbent gay Rep. Julie Johnson (D-TX) to represent Texas' newly drawn 33rd district. It is one of the few attainable seats for Democrats in the Dallas-Fort Worth area after the Supreme Court approved the GOP's new and heavily gerrymandered map. Johnson replaced Allred in Congress after he vacated his seat to run for Senate last year."
"Last year, Allred caused controversy in the Democratic party when he became the first federal-level Democratic candidate ever to release a TV ad responding to Republican transphobic attacks. "I don't want boys playing girls' sports," Allred said in the ad, responding to several aired on behalf of his Republican opponent for the Senate, anti-LGBTQ+ Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX). Trans advocates insinuated at the time that Allred's ad was transphobic and needless, seeing as most American voters aren't concerned about transgender athletes."
Colin Allred announced a Democratic primary challenge to incumbent Rep. Julie Johnson in Texas' newly drawn 33rd district, an unusually attainable seat for Democrats after the Supreme Court approved a GOP-drawn gerrymandered map. Johnson previously succeeded Allred after he vacated the seat to run for Senate. Allred had planned a 2026 Senate run but ended that campaign after Rep. Jasmine Crockett entered, opting instead to pursue Johnson's House seat to avoid a contentious primary runoff. Last year Allred released a TV ad responding to Republican anti-LGBTQ+ attacks, drawing criticism from trans advocates and prompting a public response from Johnson.
