California's Proposition 50 on redistricting to pass in blow to Trump
"The approval of the measure means Democrats might win as many as five additional seats in the House, offsetting the five that Texas Republicans are looking to pick up after Trump urged them to redraw their own maps. Republicans also expect to gain one seat each from new maps in Missouri and North Carolina, and potentially two more in Ohio."
"Newsom, who is staking his claim to leadership of the Democratic Party ahead of the 2028 presidential election on his willingness to stand up to Trump, hit back, describing the Republican's response as the ramblings of an old man that knows he's about to LOSE. Taking to X after the victory, he said voters had sent a powerful message to Trump. Tonight, California sent a powerful message to Donald Trump. We will fight for our democracy. And we will win."
Voters approved Proposition 50 by roughly two-to-one, empowering California to redraw electoral districts ahead of the 2026 midterms. The new boundaries could deliver as many as five additional House seats to Democrats, potentially offsetting Republican gains sought in Texas after state map redraws. Republicans also expect to gain seats in Missouri, North Carolina and possibly Ohio. President Trump denounced the vote on Truth Social, calling it a "GIANT SCAM" and accusing the process of being rigged. Governor Gavin Newsom celebrated the result, framed it as a message to Trump, and said California will fight for democracy and win. The new maps will apply for 2026, 2028 and 2030 elections.
