California Sens. Padilla, Schiff tour ICE detention center amid concerns over detainee treatment
""When you walk inside these walls, you experience a different trauma," Schiff said during the visit. "You get to see what happens to folks who are apprehended by ICE.""
""What are the conditions like? They look a lot more like a prison than a dormitory style setting," he said. "There is separation based on what ICE will determine level of risk.""
""Many of them that we spoke with were picked up at their immigration appointments, so they were doing what they were supposed to do, to become citizens or establish a lawful presence," he said."
Two U.S. senators toured the California City Detention Facility amid intensified federal immigration operations that have pushed ICE custody above 70,000. The privately run center raised concerns about traumatic, prison-like conditions and separation based on ICE risk determinations. Reports and a letter from the state attorney general cite inadequate medical care, lack of proper clothing or blankets, and unsanitary housing. Seven detainees filed a federal lawsuit alleging violations of basic humane-treatment standards. Several detainees reported being taken into custody after attending required immigration appointments. Official population increases could further strain conditions at the facility.
