Brooklyn church leader detained by ICE: 'Everyone deserves due process'
"everybody is entitled to due process."
"You cannot just randomly walk up to people, racially profile them, look at them like they're other,"
"And because of the color of their skin, and their mannerisms, or whatever other things you have as an agent in your brain, assume or presume that they are here illegally."
"We have to make sure everyone deserves due process, regardless of what legal status you have in this country."
Sebastian Ordonez, a 58-year-old deacon from Guatemala, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after leaving his Brooklyn apartment because he lacked legal immigration status. Family and friends say Ordonez has no history of violent crime and has been part of the Brooklyn community for nearly 20 years. His lawyer, Michael Musa-Obregon, emphasized entitlement to due process and criticized racial profiling by agents. New York City Council member Susan Zhuang, Bishop Salgado, and community members gathered to demand Ordonez's release and call for an end to federal immigration enforcement. The detention occurred amid a federal visa ban targeting countries deemed likely to need public assistance. PIX11 News contacted the Department of Homeland Security for details.
