"In addition to disavowing the mayor's posts, the resolution called for him to meaningfully engage with the Jewish community, participate in at least 16 hours of in-person training on antisemitism and 6 hours of cultural sensitivity and unconscious bias training, redistribute part of his pay to community organizations focused on building community and step down from regional bodies for a year to focus on rebuilding trust."
"A vote to consider the resolution as an emergency item failed 2-5, with Zepeda and Brown the lone supporters. Councilmember Sue Wilson said she wanted the item properly agendized and didn't believe harm would be caused by waiting two more weeks. Councilmember Claudia Jimenez said she didn't support censuring Martinez in general, and Councilmember Doria Robinson argued that the resolution was punitive and included language that leans toward criticizing political speech she said is warranted, given the death count in Gaza."
"We're not censoring the mayor from speaking. This is actually trying to heal the community,"
Richmond City Council chambers overflowed with public comment during a meeting where a censure resolution targeting Mayor Eduardo Martinez was introduced. The resolution sought formal admonishment for amplifying social media posts considered by some to promote antisemitic conspiracy theories after a Dec. 14, 2025 mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration in Australia. The measure would require engagement with the Jewish community, extensive in-person antisemitism and cultural sensitivity training, partial pay redistribution to community organizations, and stepping down from regional bodies for a year. An emergency vote failed 2-5, but sponsors may reintroduce the resolution on a future agenda.
