AI tools are making repeated factual errors', major new research warns
"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground."
"Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story. The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it. Your support makes all the difference."
"The latest wave of internet-based AI search tools often make mistakes, misread information and even give risky advice, according to a damning investigation by Which?. The Which? team surveyed 4,189 adults in the UK in September 2025 on their AI habits and found that about a third of them believe AI searches are more important to them than standard web searching."
Independent relies on donations to fund on-the-ground reporters covering issues from reproductive rights to climate change and Big Tech, and intentionally avoids paywalls so reporting remains accessible. A Which? investigation found internet-based AI search tools often make mistakes, misread information and give risky advice. Which? surveyed 4,189 UK adults in September 2025 and found about one-third value AI searches over standard web searches, with roughly half trusting AI outputs and trust rising to two-thirds among frequent users. Six AI tools were tested across 40 questions on finance, legal, health, and consumer issues and rated for accuracy, usefulness, and ethical responsibility.
