"Yeah, I would. I really would. Especially after the meeting."
"We agree on a lot more than I thought,"
"No... I met with a man who is a very rational person."
"I think you're going to have, hopefully, a really great mayor. The better he does, the happier I am. And we're going to be helping him to make everybody's dream come true. Having a strong and very safe New York."
President Donald Trump met with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani in the Oval Office and offered praise and federal assistance. Trump said he would feel comfortable living in New York under Mamdani and that they agreed on more than expected. Trump rejected accusations that Mamdani is a "jihadist" and called him a very rational person. Trump expressed hope Mamdani will be a great mayor and linked that success to a strong, safe New York. The meeting touched on contentious issues including Trump's anti-immigrant crackdown and other federal matters, and Trump compared his rapport with Mamdani to his relationship with Bernie Sanders.
