A federal judge just indefinitely barred the Trump administration from firing federal employees during the government shutdown | Fortune
"During a hearing on Oct. 15, Illston said the layoff notices that started going out on or around Oct. 10 appeared to be politically motivated and not well thought out. About 4,100 layoff notices have gone out, some sent to work email addresses that furloughed employees are not allowed to check. Some personnel were called back to work, without pay, to issue layoff notices."
"A federal judge in San Francisco on Tuesday indefinitely barred the Trump administration from firing federal employees during the government shutdown. The American Federation of Government Employees and other labor unions have sued to stop the "reductions in force" layoffs, saying the firings were an abuse of power designed to punish workers and pressure Congress. Lawyers for the government say the district court does not have the authority to hear personnel challenges."
A U.S. District Judge granted a preliminary injunction preventing the administration from carrying out mass firings of federal employees while a lawsuit proceeds. The judge previously issued a temporary restraining order that was nearing expiration and indicated evidence may show the firings were illegal and beyond authority. The administration cut jobs in education, health and other areas and declined to tap roughly $5 billion in contingency funds to keep SNAP benefits flowing into November. Labor unions sued to stop the "reductions in force," calling the layoffs punitive, while government lawyers contend the court lacks authority over personnel decisions.
