"A group of Google employees are demanding an end to any ICE or border control contracts. More than 800 Googlers signed a petition for the company to disclose how the Department of Homeland Security uses its products and services, and that it protect its vulnerable workers. The group is urging transparency and protection from the tech giant in light of President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown. The petition, distributed among Google employees on Tuesday afternoon, said it was the "leadership's ethical and policy-bound responsibility" to be transparent about its contracts with Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, including cloud services, and to divest from them."
"The petition was organized by No Tech for Apartheid, an advocacy group led by Google and Amazon workers. Representatives for Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. An organizer for the petition told Business Insider that the petition has received more than 800 signatures in under 48 hours. They said that all signatories are full-time employees, and nearly 30% are Google Cloud workers."
More than 800 Google employees signed a petition demanding that Google end contracts with ICE and other border control agencies, disclose how the Department of Homeland Security uses Google products, and divest from those relationships. The petition lists four demands: acknowledge the daily danger faced by US-based workers, host a Q&A on government and military contracts, protect all Googlers including cafeteria and data center staff, and disclose ties while setting red lines for DHS use of Google products. The petition was organized by No Tech for Apartheid and reportedly includes mostly full-time employees, with nearly 30% from Google Cloud. Google did not immediately comment, and organizers reported rapid signature growth within 48 hours.
