Now, at least under American law, certainly in New York, you would have been justified in doing so. Why? Because he's already demonstrated that he's a danger to others. Paul Mauro, a former NYPD inspector, praised Ahmed al Ahmed, a 43-year-old Muslim bystander, for intervening and disarming one perpetrator during a Hanukkah gathering attack in Australia. Mauro noted the significance of Ahmed's Muslim identity as an important nuance and highlighted Ahmed's restraint in not shooting the fleeing main perpetrator despite what he characterized as legal justification to do so. Mauro observed that Ahmed subsequently sustained two gunshot wounds, to his hand and arm, and called him a hero. Mauro also referenced his experience running NYPD counterterrorism operations and the value of Muslim officers’ expertise.
